Our mothers warned us all not to play with our food. But is that really such a bad idea? Especially when it provides opportunities to learn about principles of architecture, physics and construction. In keeping with the Summer Reading program’s “Reading is So Delicious!” theme, Librarian Poppy Louthan came up with a way to combine food, fun and learning by challenging young readers to use pasta and marshmallows to create their own towers.
Several dedicated builders, marshmallow eaters, designers, architects, scientists and their parents came out to Sylvan Oaks Library on Wednesday, August 21, to test their skills. After the initial excitement wore off, a heavy level of concentration permeated the room. And after an hour of trials and errors, tastings and successes, it was agreed that everyone was a winner in this contest. All of the children were happy to claim their prizes: a book of their choice to keep!
