Celebrate Black History Month

2/1/2013
Join us for a variety of culturally-rich Black History programs this month.

We are proud to celebrate this special month with more than 50 free programs for children, teens, adults, and families throughout February. Visit our Events page to find educational and entertaining cultural programs that include storytelling, book discussions, music and dance, films, crafts, lectures about the Civil Rights era and notable African Americans, and more.

Included in the February 1 through March 11 Black History Month exhibition at the Central Library is the recently discovered Bible, signed by the entire 1953 Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team and giving to the team’s general manager, Branch Rickey. Rickey is credited for breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson in 1945.

This unique Bible was found among boxes of donated books at the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library‘s Book Den warehouse.  For more details about the discovery, view the Sacramento CBS 13-TV video below.
