Library Happenings: February 2014

2/24/2014
Valentines, Chinese New Year, Disney princesses, a very young author...and a services serenade.

Akshaj Mehta (pictured above), 8, of Natomas poses with his family while holding his self-published book, Super Mouse. They visited the Central Library to do a photo shoot for an article in Kidaround Magazine. You can learn more about Akshaj—who has been writing since he was 5—in articles in India West and Natomas Buzz.  Akshaj has pledged 100% sales of Super Mouse to the Sacramento Children's Home.

Way back in August, library staffers got together with some students from the Art Institute of Sacramento to shoot “The Library is a Good Time,” based on a tune by Owl City with Carly Rae Jepsen. The Library’s own Carol Miranda wrote the lyrics—which tell about the many services we offer—and also directed the video and sang. Nearly two dozen other library staffers were involved, including India Curry, who shot much of the footage, and video stars Katie DeKorte, Tuula Laine, Marc Pezzell, Geoff Rohde and Jenny Scott. Enjoy!

February was Love Your Library Month—and some of you guys sure do! Someone anonymously left a bouquet of flowers and a very sweet note for the staff at the Sylvan Oaks Library. We don’t know who you are, but we really appreciate it!

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) at the Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Library showed their support for American soldiers this year in the form of handmade valentines and thank-you notes. The teens created and mailed their valentines back in December 2013 so that the cards would reach the soldiers in time for the holiday. The cards are distributed by Hugs for Soldiers, a charitable organization that delivers letters and care packages to thousands of soldiers serving overseas.

On Valentine’s Day, the North Natomas Library hosted a celebration for Disney on Ice's “Rockin' Ever After.” Here are Kaylee, Kimberly and Krista Chouang with Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.”
