Sacramento Public Library had some celebrity help promoting the annual Summer Reading program on Sunday, June 8, when fat cat “Mayor of Midtown” Norm Lopez came for a feline-themed storytime. Several dozen people showed up to meet and pet Norm and hear readings of children’s books featuring cats, such as Matilda’s Cat and Splat the Cat.
But Norm was definitely the main attraction. Known for the many friends he’s made lounging on Midtown sidewalks—and his nearly 30-pound weight—Norm has a Facebook page with thousands of fans, who also celebrate him with an annual “Friends of Norm” barbecue.
Norm’s fame grew beyond Sacramento last year. In a story that went viral, a concerned animal lover found Norm lounging on the sidewalk and mistook him for a pregnant cat. The well-meaning animal lover took Norm to a vet, who recognized him and returned him to his owner.
So take Norm’s advice: Sign up for Summer Reading and Paws to Read all summer long.
