EVENT HELD ON MAY 15, 2016

LET’S TAlk about: Death & Dying

Four people are born every second. During that same second, two people die.

We plan extensively for birth, but barely discuss our passing. Death is something nobody talks about, but everybody does — and we seek to change that.

More than 100 people joined us as we shook the taboo off of death and worked to bring it back to life during an hour-long community discussion with author Caitlin Doughty and Chaplain Jenny Ebinger.

In her memoir, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Other Lessons from the Crematory, Doughty helps to demystify death by opening the door to her time spent working in a Bay Area crematorium. She approaches the subject with frankness and levity, allowing the reader to slowly absorb the tales of her experience. Today, as a modern mortician, she encourages people to consider their death.

Chaplain Jenny Ebinger helps families to acknowledge and cope with death. As an active law enforcement chaplain volunteer, she supports local officials, families and victims as they deal with death.

Together, Doughty and Ebinger helped us reach a more comfortable place with death and dying.
