Epitaph for a Peach: Four Seasons on my Family Farm
By David Mas Masumoto: HarperSanFrancisco, 1995. (ISBN #0-06-251025-8).
The Sacramento Public Library’s countywide project, One Book Sacramento: Connecting Our Communities, encourages people of all ages in the Sacramento region to read the same book this fall.
The selected book title is Epitaph for a Peach by award-winning author David Mas Masumoto. The book chronicles a year in the author’s quest to save the Sun Crest peaches grown on his family’s Fresno-area farm. Though, more than peaches are at stake. Masumoto is a son of Japanese Americans interned during World War II. Thus, the book attempts to both document and preserve a way of life.
The following resource guide presents a thematic exploration to deepen and enhance the reader’s appreciation of the work as well as to enrich and enliven literary discussions by encouraging a process of shared discourse and inquiry. It is recommended that book discussion participants keep a Reading & Reflection Log or Journal to record and reflect upon their thoughts, feelings, questions and personal memories as they proceed through the book to create a dialectic exchange between reader and what is read.
