Reopening updates

From the directors' desk
July 14, 2021
While Sacramento Public Library has worked hard to fully open 21 locations, we know you have lots of questions about the 7 locations which are not fully open: Central, Del Paso, Ella K. McClatchy, Franklin, McKinley, North Sacramento-Hagginwood, and Orangevale. We want to share in detail the challenges we are facing in fully reopening these locations.

We have been working to renovate, repair or upgrade several locations including Orangevale, Central and Del Paso Heights. These projects have been delayed by vendor labor shortages and global supply chain disruptions. At other locations like Franklin, McKinley, McClatchy, and North Sacramento-Hagginwood; space limitations prevent us from offering in-person services due to social distancing requirements for employees. Public health requirements and workplace safety standards continue to change the rules very rapidly. We are adapting as quickly as we can to serve you.

Here’s the status of each location:
  • Central Library remains closed to the public, but offers curbside service. The Library Galleria is currently open to the public and offers computer use. Two floods in July 2020 caused significant damage to the Central Library that resulted in temporarily moving various internal operations to public floors. This has delayed our public reopening. The City of Sacramento has started repairs and we anticipate the work will be finished in August. We hope to welcome the public back into the building by mid-September.
  • Del Paso Heights Library resumed curbside service on July 8. Free grab and go Summer Meals for kids under 18 will be available for pick up on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon through August 6. This location is also being upgraded to create a technology hub that provides more space and room for homework help and computer access. We hope to fully reopen this location in September. The City of Sacramento is planning ADA updates to the parking lot in the fall.
  • Ella K. McClatchy Library began curbside service on July 15. Space limitations prevent us from offering in-person services at this time due to social distancing requirements for employees. We hope to have an update on when we can fully reopen this location soon.
  • Franklin Library one of our busiest libraries, is currently open for curbside service. Space limitations prevent us from offering in-person services at this time due to social distancing requirements for employees. We hope to have an update on when we can fully reopen this location soon.
  • McKinley Library is currently open for curbside service and computer use. Space limitations prevent us from offering in-person services at this time due to social distancing requirements for employees. We hope to have an update on when we can fully reopen this location soon.
  • North Sacramento-Hagginwood Library is currently offering curbside service. Free grab and go Summer Meals for kids under 18 will be available for pick up on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon through August 6. Space limitations prevent us from offering in-person services at this time due to social distancing requirements for employees. We hope to have an update on when we can fully reopen this location soon.
  • Orangevale Library is wrapping up a year-long expansion, which will double this location’s footprint. A soft opening is planned for August 5 and a grand reopening celebration is scheduled for September 25 at noon.
