Sacramento Public Library announced that it will expand its popular Library of Things collection on March 7 to two new locations—Valley Hi-North Laguna Library and Walnut Grove Library.
The collection includes useful household tools and instruments such as a pressure washer, KitchenAid ® mixer, acoustic guitar, DSLR camera, and even a Nintendo Switch. Library cardholders can borrow these items for up to two weeks for free. The Library of Things debuted in 2016 at Arcade Library and Fair Oaks Library as an innovative way to respond to the community’s changing needs. The expansion is the result of a community survey conducted in 2022.
Library cardholders can reserve items online for pick up at Valley Hi-North Laguna, Arcade, and Fair Oaks locations. No advance reservation is needed to check out items from Walnut Grove’s Library of Things.
“Like many of our services, the Library of Things provides a sustainable option to access items that carry a hefty price tag,” said Jarrid Keller, Sacramento Public Library deputy director. “With your library card, you can browse
New York Times Cooking for a recipe and then borrow a KitchenAid mixer and a cake pan to bake at home.”
Having a library card has its benefits. As many consumers are looking to save money and trim their growing list of paid subscriptions, the library offers a variety of free alternatives for audiobooks, streaming movies, magazines, and more.
The Library of Things allows you to access big-ticket items that you may not have the budget, space, or desire to purchase. These items paired with the library’s free resources provide the freedom and flexibility to experiment. For example, you can:
- learn to play the guitar with ArtistWorks and borrow a guitar
- learn how to sew with a tutorial on Craftsy and borrow a sewing machine for your next project
- find a recipe on New York Times Cooking and borrow a KitchenAid Mixer and a cake pan to bake
- take a LinkedIn course in photography and borrow a digital camera
