Join the Makerspace Team as a Tech Intern

The Library is hiring multiple Technology Interns this summer! Each position will offer up to 15 hours per week for up to 1 year. Pay is $15/hr. and you must be 16 years old by June 1, 2023. This is a part-time paid internship at the Design Spot at the Arcade Library (2443 Marconi Ave.) or Makerspace at the Central Library (828 I Street). 

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with MakerBot 3D printers, 3D modeling software (3D design programs), digital audio workstations (DAW), and related “maker” technology (for example, Cricut and sewing machines), but this is not a requirement. Must be willing and available to work on Saturdays. Interns will be expected to abide by the Library’s attendance policy.

Skills:

  • A high degree of integrity in dealing with confidential information
  • Technology proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, basic PC assistance, familiarity with the internet, and digital resources
  • Comfortable teaching members of the public who have minimal to no experience with technology
Learning Objectives: As an intern, you’ll learn:
  • How to work as part of a team
  • How to engage with groups of, and provide customer service to, people of all ages
  • What the library offers the community
  • What a structured, non-school work environment can look like
At the end of the internship, you’ll gain:
  • Strong research, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to perform high-quality customer service
  • Ability to excel both independently and as part of a team in a professional environment
  • Ability to organize and prioritize effectively
  • Additional technology skills (audio equipment, virtual reality/VR, digitization/analog-to-digital conversion, photo editing, cutting machine/Cricut/Cameo) 
Responsibilities: Working under the direct supervision of a Librarian or Branch Supervisor, responsibilities will include:
  • Helping patrons navigate the library’s makerspaces, including equipment, software, and general usage
  • Helping library staff run events related to the Design Spot or Makerspace, such as 3D printing training
  • Connecting library patrons with related programs and services
You’ll do this by:
  • Learning about the Design Spot or Makerspace, the library’s services, and library events
  • Assisting library staff during events, as needed
  • Providing feedback on the Design Spot or Makerspace and your experience during one-on-one meetings with your supervisor
  • Getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the library operates
