South Natomas Library's History
The City of Sacramento continued to expand through the years. More development began in the area outside downtown proper. The Natomas area is one that has grown quickly. In 1987, city and library officials had taken notice of this and started planning for library services there. A building of 12,000 square feet was what the community needed. Due to budgeting difficulties, a storefront library of 3,500 square feet was opened instead in 1994 at 1620 West El Camino Avenue in the Park Plaza Shopping Center. Much credit was given to the efforts of volunteers from the Friends of the Library who held fundraisers and kept pressuring library administration to open a branch in their community. Coral Proctor was placed in charge of the collection. The library size was increased to 4,700 square feet in 1997, to almost double the available space. Finally, in the year 2000, a groundbreaking was held at 2901 Truxel Road for a new 13,000 square foot facility. Library services began in this building in 2001 with Matt Hall in charge. The children’s wing was remodeled in October 2012 and features a large seating area and floor space for babies and toddlers, as well as children’s internet computers, early learning iPads, and lots of books.
