What We Are Reading
Book cover of "Everything is Tuberculosis."Everything is Tuberculosis: the history and persistence of our deadliest infection by John Green (audio, read by the author)
"If you’re like me and you enjoy history books that demonstrate the interrelatedness of all things, this book is a real treat. If you just enjoy history or books on social history, this is a great book. And if you enjoy books on social inequities, particularly health inequities, this is a fantastic book to read. It is an extremely accessible breakdown of the current state of tuberculosis treatment centered around the story of one young man Green met at a hospital in Sierra Leone. Intertwined with his story is a history of the disease and its impact on society. Green isn’t kidding with his title—everything really is tuberculosis. It is short, informative, and entertaining. But be forewarned, it will also make you furious as Green reminds the reader that a cure exists for tuberculosis. But that cure is where the disease is not. And the disease is where the cure is not. It comes down to this: the reason tuberculosis, and other diseases like it, haven’t been eradicated, is because humans choose not to do so."

Featured Title
Book cover of "The Compound."The Compound by Aisling Rawle
A young woman wakes up in the Compound, the setting of a long running reality show. She and 9 other women are waiting for 10 men to cross the desert and join them. They then must compete in challenges to win luxury rewards such as watches, shoes or hair straighteners. But then they are given a task that cannot be completed and they are suddenly put in real danger. They wouldn’t let anyone die on TV, would they? A sharp examination of materialism and the search for meaning in an unstable world filled with rich character development, and wrapped up in a fast-paced story, this would be perfect for literary dystopian fiction readers.

What's New This Month
If beach reads are your jam, you will have plenty of choices this July including These Summer Storms by noted romance author Sarah Maclean. This is not a romance, though! It is a family drama that would be perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult or Elin Hilderbrand. Sunny Side Up by Kate Sturino is a debut novel about a successful business woman who is stepping out with new found confidence into a new business and the dating world.

Nonfiction readers have excellent choices too with a new science book from Sam Kean, Dinner with King Tut. It’s about archaeologists who are recreating the sensations of ancient civilizations by recreating things like meals, tools, furniture and traditional practices in the modern day. A Marriage at Sea by Sophie Elmhirst is a tale of maritime misadventure in 1972, recounting the ordeal of Maurice and Maralyn Bailey who were shipwrecked and stranded for 117 days when a whale hit their boat while sailing around the world.
