North Highlands-Antelope Community Room
Looking to expand your reading into new genres and formats? Join the North Highlands-Antelope Library Book Club for friendly discussion and light refreshments as we explore contemporary and classic novels, science fiction, mystery, nonfiction, biographies, and more.  We meet every third Saturday of the month from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room. New members are always welcome!

Join us this month as we discuss two novels in verse, The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo and Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds.

The Poet X:
"Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, Xiomara Batista has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking. She pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers--especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about. Mami is determined to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, and Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself. When she is invited to join her school's slam poetry club, she can't stop thinking about performing her poems."

Long Way Down:
"As Will, fifteen, sets out to avenge his brother Shawn's fatal shooting, seven ghosts who knew Shawn board the elevator and reveal truths Will needs to know."

Copies of the titles may be picked up at the front desk of the North Highlands-Antelope Library. Digital copies are also available via the apps, Hoopla and Libby.
