One of the most exciting things about being a librarian is to see a child’s reaction when they find the perfect book: the wide smile, bright eyes, and energy when they discover something new. That excitement is brought to children in Sacramento every year through our
Book First initiative.
Funded through the generosity of our community and support of the
Friends of the Sacramento Public Library, Book First provides two brand-new books to first graders in 181 schools across Sacramento. Access to books at home is a predictor of reading success, and since 2016 Book First has provided over 100,000 books to Sacramento first graders.
Last year, library staff and Friends volunteers visited 517 classes and provided books to 12,450 students. These visits provide children with access to books they love and tools to become confident and enthusiastic readers.
We are appreciative of all the hard work of the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library to make this program a success. Their ongoing advocacy and efforts provide strong support for the library. Through their fundraising, the Friends also support our Summer Reading challenge which brings high-quality educational activities and programs to our local libraries. Every year Summer Reading helps students continue to learn, make new friends, and have fun.
I know many excellent non-profits are doing amazing work in our community, but I hope you will consider giving to the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library on Big Day of Giving. Your gift will inspire children’s appreciation of books, learning, and the library that will last a lifetime. If you are unable to donate this year, I hope you will consider
joining the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library to become part of the excellent cadre of volunteers and advocates, who continue to inspire a lifelong love of learning and reading.
